I remember feeling so overwhelmed with things we needed when we were pregnant with Myler. I asked friends on social media what was needed, & I got A LOT of responses. With so much information right at our fingertips, thanks to the internet & social media, I definitely didn’t feel a lack of help, but both my husband & I just didn’t even know where to start. On top of that, it’s kind of trial & error to see what your baby likes & what they don’t like. Even this time around, having had our 2nd newborn for 6 weeks now, there are some things we used with Myler that we don’t use now or barely use with Wallace. However, I thought it could be very helpful to some moms to see the select few items I wish I had with my first born that I use all the time now with our 2nd.
Breastfeeding:
Haaka breast pump
This is a silicone suction “pump” that you suction onto the opposite breast while feeding or pumping on the other side. It collects all your letdown that would normally go to waste into your nursing pad. If you had a strong letdown like myself, this will be your best friend! It actually helped us tremendously on Wallace’s 2nd night home because he wasn’t able to latch on that evening, & he just kept crying & crying. Because I hadn’t used my electric pump yet, I was able to cup feed him a little milk thanks to the Haaka. It was enough to satiate him, & get him back to sleep after crying for hours.
Manual breast pump
I have the Medela manual pump as I’ve linked above, but I’m sure any brand will do. I personally like having this on hand for the nights where baby is too tired to completely empty your breast or maybe baby is sleeping a little extra, & the thought of getting out your electric pump sounds too tiring ha! It’s also great to travel short distances with just incase you need that extra little bit of milk.
Spectra S2 breast pump
I had the Medela brand pump with Myler, & it was ok. Thankfully I didn’t need to have a lot of milk on hand being a stay at home mom. Myler hated bottles anyway. However, I upgraded to the Spectra after hearing so many moms prefer it over Medela. It was well worth the little extra that we paid after our insurance covered most of it. I like the options much better, the way it works, as well as it’s better suction power.
Infant Activity
Rock n Play
This is something almost every mom recommended we get. We didn’t get it with Myler, but this time around, I knew I wanted to try it out. All I have to say is “praise!” because this is AWESOME! He naps a lot in it or just hangs in it when he’s happy & doesn’t need to be held. I love that it’s comfy, but also super safe. They are tucked way in the rocker where they wouldn’t be able to roll out even if they tried. It’s been a lifesaver!
Health & Safety
Kinsa ear thermometer
Having an ear thermometer that’s easy & fast is way better than a regular one, & it’s way more accurate than forehead thermometers. Worth the money in my opinion. It’s also super simple to track all your family member’s temperatures with this through their app.
Bathtime
Blooming bath tub
Giving a newborn a bath can be so awkward because they’re still so floppy. I love this bath because it’s soft & cushy. Even though it’s not easy to just wipe away poopy messes in the bath, you can throw it in the washing machine once you’re done. And it’s cute, so that’s a win win!
Sleep
Dock a Tot or SnuggleMe Organic
If you’re interested in hearing my comparison of these two products, please let me know. They both are great, & I would recommend getting at least one of them.
There you have it! Let me know if you agree or disagree or would add any other items to the list!
Good to know about the spectra! I had the medela PISA with Adaline and it was okay–but it felt like it took a long time (Adaline did too so maybe I just produce slowly?) and I’ve been wondering about the Spectra for next time! Since I work full time it would be awesome to have one that worked a little better.
I have that hand pump and loved it! Worked super well when I had to be on the road for for pumping a bit at 4am.
I’d love to see a comparison of Dock a tot or Snuggle Me. We haven’t used either but may look into one for next time. I did have the boppy lounger that Adaline hung out on and napped a bit when she was a new born but that didn’t last long. She haaaated the Rock’n’play though–funny how all kids have their preferences even that early!
Yeah, I have been loving the Specra. It has more options than the Medela I had as well. I will put that on the list of posts to do about the Snuggle Me & Dock a Tot. Wow, that’s the first I’ve heard of a baby not liking the Rock n Play!
